It is well documented by land use policy experts that “upzoning” does not result in increased affordability to the housing market. Not generally, but certainly not in a competitive urban market like Arlington.
Further, the “Missing Middle” housing movement has been revealed to be driven by pro-density national political operatives disguised under the cloth of a false progressive social movement. Experiences nationwide reveal MMH/EHO type land use approaches do not alleviate the cost pressures in markets, but just exacerbate them.
But a key reason they continue to be pursued is not because of their effectiveness but because of the strength of political pressures by groups seeking more density for more high-end housing, such as high earning tech executives in desirable markets like Arlington. This is not speculation but something rather well documented in discussions nationally.
AFUT continues to bring transparency and facts, not conjecture, to land use policy discussions over Arlington’s future and welcomes others use of these facts and research in community discussions on this issue.
